Kuncir Sathya Viku
Kuncir Sathya Viku (b. 1990, Bali) draws from his cultural memory and experience illustrating rerajahan (visual mantras) for his father, a Balinese balian (shaman), combining these roots with his background in street murals. His practice explores traditional Balinese visual language through dynamic lines, satire, and a blend of tradition and modernity.
Kuncir creates hybrid, shamanistic imagery that fuses comical elements, rerajahan traits, and pop-surrealist touches to address ‘glocal’ issues arising from the friction between modern and traditional values. Working across drawing, painting, and installation, he pushes rerajahan beyond its conventional boundaries to reflect tensions such as spirituality versus profanity, or conservatism versus liberalism.
He has exhibited widely in Indonesia and abroad. His recent solo exhibition The Garden of Edan (2024, CGartspace, Jakarta), follows earlier solo shows in Bali. Over the last five years, his works have appeared in numerous group exhibitions in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Singapore, and Melbourne.

In this work he distils the essence of today’s Balinese art - its hybridity, restlessness, and negotiation between modernity and ancestral codes.
LSD (Lukisan Seni Drawing) becomes a playful yet critical lens, showing how contemporary Bali painting evolves by bending norms, remixing symbols, and embracing a fluid, ever-shifting cultural identity.
