Russel Wong
Russel is one of the most profiled photographers in Singapore and Asia. Starting out as a fashion photographer in Los Angeles, he went on to shoot for TIME (he is one of elite photographers assigned to shoot covers for them, 17 to date), Italian Vogue, Elle and Forbes. Today he enjoys the acclaim of being the first Singaporean to break into Hollywood.
He has worked with Oscar winning directors Ang Lee and Zhang Yimou and created publicity images for Oscar winning ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, ‘Hero’, ‘House Of Flying Daggers’ and Golden Lion winner ‘Lust Caution’.
His portraits of celebrities like Richard Gere, Jackie Chan, U2, Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and President Obama are renowned, and limited edition prints of his work have been sold at Christie’s.
In 2021 his work featuring Kyoto’s geishas, ‘Russel Wong In Kyoto’, was exhibited at the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore.
Russel had a cameo role in ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ where he played himself!
About the image Three Maikos in Kyoto
The three Maikos, or Geisha apprentices, are off to their various evening appointments in their district of Miyagawa Cho in Kyoto. Maikos train for four years before they become fully fledged Geishas. Geisha, or Geiko in the Kyoto dialect, means Woman of the Arts.
