Yunizar
Yunizar (b. 1971, Talawi, West Sumatra) is an Indonesian artist known for his intuitive, poetic approach to everyday life. Educated at the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta, he co-founded Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela (KSR Jendela), a collective that resisted the overt political art prevalent after Indonesia’s 1998 Reformation. Instead, the group emphasized experimentation, material exploration, and personal sensibility. Yunizar’s work rejects heroic narratives, focusing instead on rasa—the emotional essence of ordinary subjects. His seemingly naïve, childlike style conceals depth and mystery, from early paintings of alienated human figures to his mid-2000s Coretan series of unreadable, rhythmic scribbles inspired by street graffiti and oral traditions. Over time, he expanded into motifs blending reality and myth, including the Garuda, and began producing bronze sculptures in 2012. Yunizar’s works are internationally recognized and held in major collections, including SAM, the Long Museum, and Benesse.

Yunizar’s paintings often revolve around a central figure, embedded within a dense field of signs, creatures, and shifting forms. Rather than offering a fixed narrative or legible hierarchy, the work unfolds through accumulation and drift. Meaning emerges provisionally, through relation rather than resolution. Apparent excess and digression appear as generative conditions, inviting viewers to move laterally across the surface.
The work resists translation into a singular message, proposing instead an open ecology of images where sensation, intuition, and ambiguity remain active.
